Stop Fighting Your Golf Ball
If I could give every golfer one piece of advice, it would be this: Stop trying to hit every shot perfectly straight. It sounds strange, but even the best players in the world don't play that way. Most Tour professionals have a stock shot—a ball flight they trust under pressure. Some play a fade, others a draw. The difference is they don't fight their natural shape. They learn to trust it. One of the first questions I ask golfers during a lesson is: "What does your normal sho

Golf, the gift that keeps on giving.
There are many reasons why I love this game, but every now and then it reminds me just how special it really is. Winning the PGA of Belgium Seniors Championship at Royal Antwerp Golf Club last week is something I’m incredibly proud of. After more than 30 years as a golf professional, this is my first national title. It may have taken a while, but that somehow makes it even more meaningful. What made the week even more memorable was having my son Roderick caddying for me . Gol

Elite Golf Isn't Just About Great Golf
I have been extremely fortunate throughout my coaching career to have had a front-row seat to some fantastic players' journeys to success. This week is another one of those special experiences as I'm in Spain with the Belgian National Boys Team as their coach. The European Team Championships is the highest level of amateur golf on the continent, and just about every European player who has gone on to wear a Ryder Cup uniform has competed in this event. The championship begins

Does Hot Weather Really Make the Golf Ball Fly Further?
Every summer, when the temperature climbs above 30°C, I hear the same thing on the first tee: "I don't know what's happened, George. My 7-iron has suddenly gone 10 metres further!" Well, before you start booking your place on the Ryder Cup team, let's look at what the science actually says. A golfer who normally hits a 7-iron 130 metres at 20°C might only gain around 1–2 metres of carry when the temperature rises to 35°C. That's because warm air is less dense than cold air, c

The psychology of scoring
Today felt like a struggle on the course. On days like these, we tell ourselves to keep going and not give up, but drawing a line under the previous hole can be a challenge for almost every golfer. After all, golfers have an incredible ability to turn one bad swing into a full-scale investigation of their technique, equipment, and life choices. When attending prize givings on a Sunday evening at the clubs where I've been fortunate enough to teach, I would often hear tales fro

The challenge of playing hilly courses
This week, the venue for the PGA Monday Tour was Spiegelven Golf Club in Limburg. Despite having to set my alarm for 5:30am and face a long drive, I was really looking forward to the challenge of playing this course. Spiegelven is set on beautifully undulating terrain, with plenty of elevation changes and some wonderfully tricky greens. It's a course that's well worth a visit. As I play most of my golf in West Flanders ("mijn vlakke land", as my favourite singer Jacques Brel

Why most golfer don't understand distance control in putting. (Never up never in, not the best strategy)
This week when coaching at the DP world tour event here in Belgium it struck me that not every professional player I coach understands what a good strategy around distance control on the greens is. If some of those guys don't get it, what does the average amateur trying to improve their games do? First we have to realise that when we are between 6 - 12m (or further) the absolute goal is to make a 2 putt with as little stress as possible. When we understand this it means we ar
